Playing defensively

Make attacks on you unprofitable: high cranny, a good wall, mixed defensive troops, scouts at home, and an alliance that reinforces you.
What works best
  • Wall and Residence/Palace both raise your base defence; the wall multiplies all troops.
  • Mix defence against infantry (Praetorian, Phalanx, Paladin, Druidrider) and cavalry (Spearman, Phalanx, Haeduan, Equites Caesaris).
  • Upgrade defence in the Armoury.
  • Gauls: traps catch attackers before the fight.
  • Stone Walls boost: +10% defence for 3 days, useful when a big attack is coming.
  • Reinforce allies with fast defensive cavalry.
  • Hero with Defence and Defence bonus points, kept at home.
